Frobishers was delighted to be part of a team of food and drink producers from the south-west invited on a trade mission to China organised by the China Britain Business Council and Business West. The fam trip, supported by the Department for International Trade as well as a number of sponsors, took place at the end of September, providing a taste of the opportunities that this 1.4bn population country could present and opening doors to some of its leading retail and commercial prospects.
Joined by brands such as Luscombe Drinks, Rodda's Clotted Cream, Salcombe Distilling Co. and the Skinner Brewing Co., we enjoyed a packed schedule of arranged guest visits as well as one-to-one meetings with targeted importers and retailers in China. Key highlights included a VIP tour to one of China’s largest online retailers, JD.com of Beijing, which currently boasts a database of around 480 million on-line shoppers, a visit to the Golden Eagle Department Store in Nanjing and an exclusive reception at the home of the British Counsel General.
The week-long trip offered a snapshot of what could be achieved through export to this vast country, and an exciting opening that we are eager to capitalise on. As the second-largest economy in the world, with sales of consumer goods of around RMB37 trillion (£4.4 trillion) and growing, the population’s increasing thirst for western premium brands marks an exciting proposition for our much-loved juices and juice drinks.
Returning from the trip, Steve Carter, sales and marketing director at Frobishers says;
“The market in China is immense to say the least, and can appear daunting and elusive to many manufactures back in the UK. The scale, language and cultural differences can often seem unsurmountable, but this trip was a fabulous first taste of what could be achieved there. The introductions and door opening made available by the team at the China Britain Business Council were invaluable and I look forward to championing the start of our new Chinese adventure. Thanks must go to the sponsors, Santander Bank, Milsted Langdon and Clarke Willmott and of course, to the CBBC and Business West for facilitating it.”
